Back Bison / Buffalo The bison (or buffalo) is a large horned animal. They graze on grassy plains. They live and travel in groups called herds. Many years ago they roamed across North America in large herds. Pioneers killed millions for food, their hides and just for the sport. These animals were almost hunted to extinction. Luckily they now thrive on government preservations and on private ranches.  (Date: 7/29/2005)
